Description
Eco Squirrel Feeder: A Sustainable Choice
This eco squirrel feeder, crafted from leftover Douglas Fir wood is a testament to sustainability. Handmade in Fife with offcuts sourced from my local sawmill, it follows the designs from the Red Squirrel Trust in Wales.
I’m lucky to have a source of Douglas Fir offcuts, as this wood is exceptionally durable and there is no need for paint or preservatives.
Clever Design for Squirrels
Squirrels can easily access their food by nudging the feeder’s lid open with their noses. This clever design allows them to grab what they want before the lid closes again. The Eco Feeder also features a platform where squirrels can sit while they enjoy their meal
Learning Made Easy
These intelligent creatures quickly learn how to lift the lid to access their food, whether it’s peanuts or seeds, all visible through the clear perspex screen. To help them get started, simply prop the lid open with a stick.
Thoughtful Materials
The front panel is crafted from a piece of perspex I’ve had lying around for years, and the rubber hinge is repurposed from a bicycle inner tube. For easy cleaning, you can simply remove the perspex front.
Unique and Handmade
As a one-of-a-kind item made from sawmill offcuts and other repurposed materials, some imperfections are to be expected. Embrace the charm of handmade craftsmanship!
Tips for Feeding Squirrels
Feeding squirrels can be a rewarding experience. Here are some practical tips :
1. Provide a Dedicated Feeder
Using a squirrel feeder helps keep them away from bird feeders and prevents overfeeding. This way, you can create a safe space just for them.
2. Choose a Good Location
Place the feeder in a spot that offers a quick escape route, such as near a tree or a high wall. Keeping it off the ground reduces the risk of attracting cats.
3. Clean Regularly
To maintain hygiene, wash the feeder with a mild disinfectant and remove any uneaten food before refilling. Regular cleaning helps prevent disease.
4. Feed a Variety
Offer a mix of foods, as feeding too many peanuts can lead to bone thinning in squirrels. Variety keeps their diet balanced and healthy.
5. Be Mindful of Pets
Ensure your pets won’t disturb the squirrels.
6. Plant Trees
Planting trees provides natural food and shelter for squirrels, enhancing their habitat and encouraging their presence in your garden.
By following these tips, you can create a welcoming environment for squirrels while keeping both them and your pets safe.
